Let’s Celebrate Reading
Did you know that February 5th is World Read Aloud Day?!
Reading is such a huge part of my learning environment. To celebrate this awesome day, my students will be doing two very fun activities!
Books & Blankets
The first activity will be books and blankets. If you don’t know what book’s and blankets is, you are in for a special treat! During our reading class, instead of me teaching a mini lesson, students can bring in a pillow, sleeping bag or blanket, slippers, extra snack, stuffed animal, and of course reading materials. They spend 45 minutes to an hour just reading and relaxing. I currently teach 5th grade, and you’d be surprised to know just how many of my 5th graders bring their stuffed animal along for books and blankets. While this activity isn’t necessarily reading aloud, they will still be reading so it’s a win-win. I am thinking about pairing them with a buddy to read with. But we’ll see… Last year I was paired with a book buddies class, and it would have been nice to have this reading experience with our friends from first grade.
World Read Aloud Day Project
The second activity that students will be participating in is a World Read Aloud Day Reading Project. Here’s how this works:
Students are to record themselves with an electronic device, reading a picture book aloud. They will then submit the recording to me through email or Google Classroom.
The project will be due on or before February 4th.
Students will be graded on the appropriateness of the book, clarity of the video, 2-5 minute reading, expression, illustrations shown from the book they are reading, and having their project turned in on time.
I will then take all of the projects and will upload them to Google Classroom or a shared drive. On World Read Aloud Day they will then spend about an hour, listening to their friends read their stories!
I think this is such a cool activity!
If you’d like to also participate in this fun World Read Aloud Day Reading Exchange, feel free to download and use the rubric!
Happy Reading!
